The story behind the hit single

Every Family’s Business

When music superstar Steven Ryan read The New York Times Top Ten book, Every Family’s Business, he knew it captured a part of his own family business story — the rest, as they say, is music history.

When the two met for dinner before a speech that Deans was delivering in October 2014, Deans shared with Ryan that he had written the lyrics to a song about the book. The lyrics, he explained, remained in the top drawer of his desk for 7 years. “I wasn’t sure what I would do with the song”, Deans said. “But like so many of the
extraordinary experiences surrounding the release of the book, I knew I would meet the right person to put music to the words — Steven is that guy. On his first cut, this talented artist totally nailed it.”

“The song captures the essence of the book. – captures the passion, the pain and the dangers of gifting a family business to the next generation. But it’s also a song full of hope and promise.” said Deans.

Much like the 600 paid speeches Deans has delivered in 16 countries; you can feel the passion in the words and the performance around the idea that families, not businesses, should be built to last. As the song says: “its a brand new tune bringing peace and love to Every Family’s Business set free like a dove.”

Asked about what he hopes to accomplish with the song, Deans replied — I’ve sold over 500,000 copies of Every Family’s Business — that’s 495,000 copies more than I imagined when the book was released in 2008. The book is still selling at the rate of one copy every ten minutes. A literary reviewer recently called it a timeless classic…

Song Lyrics – Every Family’s Business

So easy to start, yet seldom thought through.
Working shoulder to shoulder grinding us blue.
Making them last, making them old.
It’s a familiar song — they’re never sold.

So I’ll die one day and I’ll gift them the bomb.
Till then Tick Tock goes our family song.
Till then Tick Tock goes our family song.
It’s the same old beat that’s got it utterly wrong.

There’s a better way so simple and smart.
It’s the kind of gift flowing straight from the heart.
Give them your wisdom and some money too.
Ideas and values that forever ring true.

So I’ll die one day and won’t gift them the bomb.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
A brand new song that makes our family strong.

So After I’m gone we’ll sing a brand new song.
About a proud family left united and strong.
After I die and my star’s shining bright.
I’ll take comfort and joy knowing I did what was right.

So I’ll die one day and won’t gift them the bomb.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
A brand new song that makes our family strong.

This gift of freedom that comes from the sale.
Comes with a promise to continue the tale.
My family’s legacy, not a name on a sign.
It’s a freeing idea and so right for the times – I know it’s right.

It’s a brand new tune bringing peace and love
to Every Family’s Business set free like a dove.
It’s a brand new tune bringing peace and love
to Every Family’s Business set free like a dove.

So I’ll die one day and won’t give them the bomb.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
There’ll be no Tick Tock in our family song.
A brand new song that cuts the fuse on the bomb.
